Economic Growth and Business Development in the Narrabri Shire
The draft plan has been established and meetings are occuring to discuss the plan and it will be made available as soon as it has been finalized
A new project is getting underway in Narrabri, Boggabri, Pilliga, Gwabegar and Wee Waa aimed at local business development and economic growth. Bill Birch, the Economic Development Manager of the Narrabri Shire Council says that “the project is essential to retaining and expanding a broad base of businesses and services in all the towns and to getting Council and the business community working together in partnership to develop opportunities for economic growth.”
The first stage of the project is a survey of local business owners which will get underway late April. The project is a joint effort between the local business communities of Narrabri, Boggabri, Pilliga, Gwabegar and Wee Waa, the Narrabri Council and the NSW Department of State and Regional Development. The project recognises that the existing businesses in any town are its most valuable economic and employment asset.
The project manager, Ian Mackey from Cre8ing Growth P/L, stressed this point recently when talking to the local taskforce who are steering the project. “You can spend a lot of time and money trying to get firms from elsewhere to relocate to your town, meanwhile, your existing business base remains taken for granted and therefore neglected. Through the Retention and Expansion project we aim to remedy this situation, by asking local firms about their needs and plans and how they think the local business environment could be improved.”
All local businesses in each of the towns will receive a letter and a survey covering all the relevant topics, with a reply paid envelope. Local volunteers will help chase up any firms who don’t return the survey. Bill Birch urges business owners to take the opportunity to air their views and to contribute to the pool of information about the local business scene. Individual comments and plans will be treated in total confidence, but the aggregated information is of great value in solving local problems, planning for the future, and creating opportunities from growth and development.
Ian Mackey advised “The real strength of the Survey is that it encourages the development of partnerships between all stakeholders to work together to solve identified problems that may exist within the business community and importantly to assist them to work together to take advantage of the identified opportunities.”
Businesses that participate in the survey can be assured that the information given will be held in total confidence. “The Data is only seen by us” Ian advised, and added “In all the towns that we have conducted the survey, businesses very quickly understand the value of participation for their business and welcome the fact that we have been employed to ensure total confidentiality.”
Any questions regarding the survey can be directed to Ian Mackey on 0414496493
